For the past few months, we’ve all been stuck in our houses. Going out to the range is a great way to cure boredom and practice a useful skill. The right equipment for the range is crucial, but with so many different options out there, how do you know you’re bringing the right gear?
Here’s a no-BS list of 5 essentials for your next trip to the range:

1. Ear Protection
Unless you’re shooting suppressed, ear-pro is an absolute must. There are a few different options to choose from: in-ear ear plugs (most affordable), standard earmuffs (middle of the road) and electronic earmuffs (most expensive). I personally prefer electronic earmuffs because they allow me to adjust surrounding volume levels and communicate effectively with those around me.
2. Screwdriver, Allen Keys & Batteries
Easily the most commonly forgotten items, screwdrivers, allen keys and batteries can make or break your range trip. Nothing is more annoying than needing to make an adjustment or losing power in your ear-pro and then not having the proper tools to remedy the situation.
3. Eye Protection
When it comes to eye-pro, I’m pretty practical and use sunglasses (that way I only have to spend once and can use them on and off the range). At a minimum you’re going to want something with shatterproof lenses. Extra points if it offers a ballistic protection rating like ANSI Z87.1.
Remember, you don’t need to spend $150+ to find a solid pair of glasses, but just make sure they offer the right level of protection.
4. Ammo
It goes without saying but you’re going to need rounds. Make sure to check the policies at your local range to see which kind of ammo is allowed. Range attendants WILL check before letting you shoot. Every location is different so do yourself a favor and check for restrictions before stocking up.
